A sweeping global study has found that giving children smartphones before the age of 13 is strongly associated with poorer mental health outcomes in adolescence and early adulthood. The research, which surveyed nearly 2 million people across more than 160 countries, links early smartphone ownership to increased risks of suicidal thoughts, aggression, low self-worth, and behavioral issues. Experts warn that excessive screen time and early access to digital devices can disrupt sleep, social development, and emotional regulation, with particularly pronounced effects in girls. The findings have prompted renewed calls from scientists and health professionals for parents to delay giving smartphones to children and for policymakers to consider age restrictions. Parents are encouraged to create safer digital environments and limit screen exposure to protect children's mental well-being.
